South Africa 2005: Utopia. Nowhere. Close.
Tokara Winery
Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa - Van Biljon & Visser Architects
The Cape winelands in the hinterland of the first European settlement in South Africa are a particular landscape of drama and contrast. The distinctly European architectural heritage of the Cape is based in large measure on pavilion type buildings set as objects or courtyard groups into the fertile landscape of hills and distant mountains. This winery is a consciously modern interpretation of this heritage, with the aim of minimising the impact of the buildings on the landscape.
