In the search for an essential expression of enclosure, the architectural identity of this residence and meditation pavilion is distilled directly from a reading of the surrounding landscape. In its search, this project is expressive of a specific kind of contemporary South African reality. Both pavilions lie on the spectacularly beautiful slopes of Vlakkenberg amidst rolling vineyards overlooking the entire Cape Peninsula. The normal fortified South African architecture of punctured walls and attached roof was avoided. Instead, a collection of floating elements are held together in a unified whole.
