Sport and its pervasive transmission by media are the new heroics of a globalised world. In South Africa, sport has a particular cultural and political dimension and a particular institutional culture. Indeed, it can be argued that the Sports Boycott against the apartheid regime was the most acutely felt aspect of the international isolation of apartheid South Africa. The promotion of sport and its projection and embodiment as a science on an academic campus is therefore a highly symbolically charged field of enquiry.
