The South African landscape is characterised by generous spaces, striking contrasts and a dramatic presence under a wide open sky. It is a landscape in which architecture is absent, occurring as punctuation in a ‘road movie’ of endlessly unfolding beauty. This set of toll gates is one of the few direct points of direct architectural experience on a journey through the landscape.
